ENUM - Telephone Number Mapping

ENUM is a next generation engineering protocol that converge Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN) and the IP network.

Taken literally, ENUM is defined as Telephone Number Mapping and correlates telephone numbers from the PSTN to an internet address via the DNS system.

The concept of ENUM is communications mobility; the ability to be reached globally with the same telephone number and via the most optimal and cost effective methodology.

Technically speaking, ENUM takes a phone number and links it to an internet address which is published in the DNS system. An ENUM number owner has the ability to configure where a call should be routed via their DNS entry and multiple entries can be defined for different types of calls.
